Chemical Reaction

Chemicals are everywhere

I recently had a friend call just to tell me how excited she was to be cleaning her house. She then explained how much relief and joy she felt because, since she started using Thieves Household Cleaner, she has been able to clean without worrying about getting sick. Sometimes, the simple act of cleaning her house would make her ill for days. I knew those feelings quite well myself.

I used to get sick–a lot. But it took me years to figure out why. I found it difficult to connect the chemicals that I was using to clean with the reactions that I was having. When I finally figured it out, though, I was scared instead of relieved. I am allergic to chemicals? Like really allergic? How would this affect me going forward? Will this new reality change my everyday life?

While I always liked to say I was “a delicate flower,” in reality, I was more of a tough cookie– and proud of it. But that changed when I got sick. I had to become the delicate flower I never wanted to be. The simplest things would cause me to have a terrible reaction–walking through a grocery store, the mall, or just stopping by a friend’s house.

At times, I still find it embarrassing or disheartening, but I realize that it’s a symptom of my autoimmune disease and part of life. I do what I can to keep it under control, but a moment in or around Yankee Candle will cause my right eye to bulge for days. At times it comes on so quickly that my husband notices the change before I do. It’s impossible to hide my allergic reaction, so wherever I am, whatever I am doing, I have to leave. Over time I  have learned what the triggers are, but it’s impossible to shield myself from them all the time.

While I do my best to stay vigilant and watch my diet and nutrition, I also had to adjust my lifestyle—in some cases, drastically. Ultimately, it’s what put me on this path of chemical-free living and using natural things to support my body. It’s how I got introduced to Young Living.

I realize that, nowadays, not all roads lead to Rome. There are a million different ways to do things, hundreds of roads that can take you away from a single crossroad. Therefore, knowing what triggers your body helps. Then doing research and figuring out how to support your body on the road to wellness helps too.

Everyone is different. What has worked for me, may not work for you. Conversely, what works for you, may not work for me. The key is knowing your limitations and then working within those parameters.

Now, I clean my house with Thieves Household Cleaner and I find I can clean without fear of being “down for the count” afterwards. So when my friend called because she was able to clean her house for the first time without repercussions, I knew her joy and relief personally.
