Choose to Lose

It’s a new year and everyone is making their resolutions. At the top of nearly everyone’s list is to lose weight. But it doesn’t take long before our unrealistic resolutions take a back seat to chaos and are eventually broken. Pretty soon we’ve forgotten them altogether—until next year’s resolutions. Why is that? It’s because we have too much on our plate.

No, I’m not talking about food. I’m talking about our emotional plate—the stress of our everyday lives. We have an employer to please, homes to clean, laundry to do, yards to mow, groceries to buy, meals to cook, cars to maintain, kids to raise and take to soccer practice, pets to walk and bathe, and a spouse to care for. These responsibilities and many more, add mental and emotional weight to our plate.

We need to work and eat. We need a place to live. We can’t give our kids back, even if we want to, sometimes. So what can we do? What can we do to lose our excess “weight” and trim down on our stress?

Nest Pretty Challenge #1Make a list of chores. Go through your home and write down what needs to be done in each room each week. For example: Living room—Dust and vacuum. Bathroom—mirror, sink, counter, toilet, shower/tub, floor. (For suggestions on how to clean a bathroom, watch this video.) Once you make your list, put it where your family can see it so they know what needs to be done.

Here is the real challenge: Encourage your family to help you by not taking the chores back. For instance, one of your kid’s chores is to fold the towels. When the chore is done, the towels may not be folded the way you’d like, but if they are folded and put away, don’t take them out and refold them. You’ve just taken the chore back, and it’s a quick and easy way to discourage your child from ever helping you again.

There are only few things in life we can control, which is why we hold on so tightly to them. But choosing to give up a little control with some household chores is a great way to de-stress and lose “weight.”

One of the first things any nutritionist will tell you when you want to lose a few dress sizes is to reduce your portion sizes. So reduce your portion size by making a list of chores and letting your family take some of that weight off your shoulders. By choosing not to take the chores back, you can lose that weight for good.
