With the recent shortage of hand sanitizer, people are freaking out and wondering what they are going to do. Hand sanitizers are nice but only in an emergency—like if you had to use an outhouse, or pee behind a bush, or you just touched the gas pump that 87,000 other people touched before you.
But did you know that, after using hand sanitizer four times straight, it’s rendered useless? You need to reset and wash your hands so the sanitizer keeps its effectiveness.
I always go back to what my mama taught me—nothing can substitute for good ol’ fashioned soap and water. So many people are washing their hands more than ever and that’s great! It’s a super important and easy way to keep you and your family healthy. But have you ever wondered what hand soap you should use? Which one is the best?
When I step into the household items aisle at my local market, I’m amazed by the sheer number of choices there are of hand soap. Natural, anti-bacterial, scented, unscented…the choices are endless. And I see so many women standing in that aisle, picking up bottles of soap and looking at the ingredients trying to figure out what their best choice is.
I went through something similar. In the beginning of my chemical-free lifestyle, I chose to use Dr. Bronner’s castile soap. It was the best option for a more natural clean. It’s full of organic oils and essential oils and no chemicals, so I felt like I had made a healthy choice. The problem always came when I used it in my soap dispenser. It has a tendency to solidify (no doubt because of the oils in it) and gunk up the pump.
Incidentally, that really ‘bites you in the bum’ when you have a guest come over and you fail to tell them to be careful when using the soap and they end up squirting Dr. Bronner’s all over their brand new, expensive, designer shirt. Just sayin’.
The other issue is that science is still not in agreement over whether or not antibacterial soaps are even good for us. Good bacteria is essential to our microbiome. A healthy microbiome affects every aspect of our health, mind and body. But antibacterial soaps kill all bacteria, good and bad.
I recently started reading Inner Transformations Using Essential Oils, by Drs. Deardeuff, which discusses how essential a healthy microbiome is. It says:
‘Beneficial bacteria train the new enterocytes (cells that are actively involved in shaping the intestinal immune environment, and help keep a balance between suppression and stimulation of the inflammatory responses) and are critical to the development of the immune system…. Up to 80% of the immune system resides in the gut. Good bacteria…help guide new T-cells to recognize which things are friends and which are foes to be attacked. Without the education brought about by beneficial bacteria, our immune system would be weaker.’
So killing all of the bacteria on your body and hands may not be the healthiest option. Hence the dilemma about whether or not to use antibacterial soaps.
