How Essential Oils have improved my nightly routine

Remember the days when your bedtime routine consisted of putting on your favorite jamjams and brushing your teeth? Life was simpler then. But as you got a older, you had to make adjustments. You had to wash your face. Eventually you were introduced to moisturizer. Then perhaps you added an evening shower, and so on. 

Now I find my nightly routine getting even longer. While I try to get to bed by 9:30, I end up turning the lights out much later. But what I do at night now is absolutely essential, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Why? Because I have adjusted my routine to help me get a good night’s sleep in order to ensure that I have a great tomorrow. 

My Nightly Routine

I start out with a warm cup of something relaxing, like SleepyTime tea or Golden Milk. Both help me to wind down, but I especially love Golden Milk. It’s not really milk. It is a paste made with turmeric and coconut oil or coconut milk that you add to hot water to make into a tea. 

The turmeric helps with inflammation and can even help to suppress the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Coconut milk has many vitamins and antioxidants including vitamins C, E, and B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and iron. So drinking this before I go to bed not only relaxes me, but I love knowing I am doing something good for my body.

I still wash my face every night. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but there are those women out there who will go to bed with their makeup on, just saying. Anyway, instead of commercial face washes like Noxzema (a teenager’s first facial cleanser, right?) or Cetaphil, I now use the Art Skin Care system by Young Living.

Plant-based, infused with essential oils, my skin is in love with Art. The foaming cleanser is luxurious and the scent is divine. The toner is non-drying and infused with some of my favorite oils including Frank and lavender. The moisturizer is just enough, not oily or greasy, but does it’s job well without making me feel like I shouldn’t let my face touch the pillow because I’ll leave an oil slick. 

I love that I feel like I am pampering myself every night when I wash my face with the Art Skin Care system.

Brushing my teeth has also become a healthier, plant-based experience. No fluoride for me. I use Thieves Aromabright toothpaste. I recently ordered myself a tube of the whitening formula, and I have to say I am loving it. Are my teeth whiter? You be the judge…

My last Young Living monthly order, I bought two bottles of Lavender and Cedarwood. I have a diffuser on each side of the bed, and I found myself every night walking around the bed with my oils. So I thought, why not simplify? So I got two bottles of each and saved myself a few steps every night. 

I like to put a few drops of each in the diffusers and get them started an hour before bedtime so that, when you walk into the bedroom, you are enveloped in that relaxing, spa-like aroma. Is there anything better than being tucked into bed with lavender and cedarwood caressing your olfactory system?

This is where my nightly routine becomes heavenly. Just as I am about to get into bed, I rub myself down with Young Living’s Relaxation massage oil. Lavender, coriander, tangerine, and spearmint essential oils are infused along with a carrier oil. It’s really fantastic and I highly recommend it.

I then rub two essential oil blends on my feet. The first—Thieves. I have done this every night for years now and it really helps keep me above the wellness line. If you haven’t tried it, you should.

My final act before bed is putting the second blend—Rutavala—on my feet. This is a blend of Ruta, Lavender, and Valerian essential oils. Although Lavender and Valerian essential oils are well known, Young Living’s RutaVaLa oil blend includes the less well known—yet still effective—Ruta oil and the blend of the three helps promote relaxation. It’s one of my favorite oils and my body just loves it.

After doing all of this—the tea, the pampering, diffusing, massaging, and applying of all of these fantastic, relaxing oils—when my head finally hits the pillow, I am out. 

Sleep is so important, it’s restorative, for our body and mind. So why wouldn’t you want to have a nightly routine that will help you sleep your best? Yes, my nightly routine is longer, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
