The Summer of George

One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes is the one entitled above. George gets fired from his job with the Yankees but discovers he has a three-month severance package. So while he is being paid for doing nothing, he decides to have a memorable summer, declaring it “The Summer of George.” He plans to “‘read a book from beginning to end, in that order; learn to play Frolf…Frisbee golf; and let the juices of summer run down [his] chin.’”

So that begs the question, what would you like to do this summer? Summers are glorious, and yet, so short. If you don’t plan out what you want to do—what your goals are—then the summer will be gone in a moment—in the blink of an eye—leaving you wondering where the time went.

Are your children out of school for summer vacation? Would you like to take them somewhere, maybe Disney or some other fun place? Or are you childless, but have a paid vacation you have yet to use? Do you enjoy the beach, or taking long walks in your neighborhood on warm evenings? Would you like to watch the fireflies when they wake up at dusk? Or would you prefer to watch a sunset from beginning to end?

It doesn’t matter how big or small your goals are, the point is, if you are going to enjoy the summer fully you have to plan ahead. So this month we are going to focus on how to get the most out of your summer. First things first–Carpe summer! How?

Design—Don’t wait to plan your summer getaway. By designing your summer in advance, it makes it much easier to say no to extemporaneous and last minute invites that chew up the weekends. Figure out when you want to get away. Make that block (or blocks) of time non-negotiable.

Prime—If you’re not a “planner” then be ready—ready for anything. Make sure your beach bags, picnic basket, or grilling essentials are ready so you can grab them and head out the door. If you’re the kind of person that prefers just being able to go somewhere or do something on a whim, then having what you need primed and ready can help you seize the opportunity when it presents itself.

Explore—Look for weekend getaways. Thanks to all the travel apps out there, you can find all kinds of last minute deals to help you steal away a weekend here or there. Hotels, restaurants, and boat rides are just a few options for good deals—you just have to keep your eyes open. But in order to be able to take advantage of them, you need to be ready.

For example, if I am able to have a weekend away, I want to enjoy it without a last minute trip to the store. So I put together a “weekend-away checklist.” This helps me keep any travel essentials on hand and at my fingertips. When the summer begins, I go over my checklist and make sure I have everything on it. If Judah and I get the itch to get out of town, I know my overnight bag will be packed in no time.

Hang Out—Staycation? Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.’ I just did a staycation at the beginning of June and it…was…fabulous! But you have to do it right. Treat your home like the all-inclusive resort it can be. Choose to Nest Pretty and choose to ignore the honey-do and I-can-do lists so you can really enjoy your home. Get some rest—in your bed—with your favorite foods and drinks. If done right, a staycation can be just exactly what you need, refreshing, restful, and reinvigorating.

Summer is too short not to design, prime, explore, or hang out. Choose to Nest Pretty and choose to plan ahead to get the most out of the season. Seize the summer! Proclaim it the “Summer of Insert Your Name” or whatever you want to name it. Above all, have a wonderful, glorious, relaxing, and memorable summer.
