This week I had a friend ask me the price of an essential oil. I know where she usually buys her oils, so I knew that she was going to balk at the price before I even told her. But I told her just the same. Sure enough, it’s too expensive for her. I totally understand. When you are looking at the hard costs of essential oils, it can be a little shocking…at first.
But after she objected to the price, her next question was the same one that everyone asks me when they begin using essential oils—“how do I know if the oil is pure?”
No doubt you have read studies online that show that essential oils have health benefits and will help you and your family stay above the wellness line. That’s probably why you’re trying them out in the first place. But the question of purity is critical, and it can be confusing to know what to buy and how to spend your hard-earned money since the price differential can be quite dramatic at times.
Essential oils are sold at Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart, Target, your local grocery or health food store, Whole Foods, Christmas Tree Shops, and on Amazon.com. The same oil can range in price from $5, to $9, to $14, or more. So which one should you buy? Which one is pure? Who should you ask to find out–the store clerk? Probably not, but a clerk should be able to tell you which aisle the essential oils are in. . .theoretically. (I asked a clerk once where the essential oils were and he took me to the salad dressing aisle. Just saying . . .)
Unfortunately, it’s really up to you to do your own research. Don’t just believe my word for it, or anyone else’s for that matter. Research the company—how they distill, where they get their plants. And research their reputation. That’s what I did, which is why I grew to love Young Living. But you need to do the same if you want to make an educated purchase. No one can do this for you.
